Endgame director worries Marvel will give us “too much” of the multiverse

Between Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of MadnessLoki and What if…?Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is all about exploring the infinite possibilities of the multiverse. Multiverse of madness will give us our most in-depth look yet. In the most recent trailer, many fans believe they’ve seen Patrick Stewart back in his iconic role as Charles Xavier, although the actor himself denies his involvement. Whether he’s in it or not, I’m sure the movie will have a lot of surprises.

It’s not just Marvel that’s interested in the multiverse. Later this year, The flash will see the highly anticipated return of Michael Keaton’s beloved version of Batman. The multiverse is all the rage right now, but Avengers: Endgame co-director Joe Russo wonders if it no longer remains welcome. “Too much of one thing is a bad thing, but I think there are plenty of creators and innovators in the space where you can be surprised,” he said at Dice Summit 2022. “Just don’t expect companies to surprise you.”

The corporate agenda is: Do you like chocolate ice cream? Well, here’s chocolate ice cream with sprinkles, here’s chocolate ice cream with fudge… Their job is to turn on the money printer. It’s the creator’s job to say, “Well, shit, I don’t know if I want to see that.”

In this case, will the creatives speak loud enough, or will the corporations give us more multiverse than we’re willing to handle?

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will live up to its name and then some

Speaking with Disneys D23 magazineMultiverse of madness co-producer Richie Palmer explained why the word ‘madness’ is in the title. “We respect every definition of the word ‘madness’ in this film,” he said. “For example, it’s not just the madness of what an alternate universe might look, feel, or sound like. When you see that there are infinite versions of yourself in infinite universes and you are a different person in those different facets, rise to the top.”

Could this be the craziest, craziest Marvel movie ever made? We’ll see when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will premiere on May 6, 2022!
