Greenhouse Sandton has announced that their restaurant will be temporarily closed after the establishment caught fire on Saturday night.
According to a statement from Greenhouse Sandton’s management, damage to the property was “largely superficial” and customers promised they would be “up and running” soon.
There were also no injuries or fatalities, as management said the restaurant’s “open interior and exterior design” allowed them to evacuate customers and staff quickly and safely.
The cause of the fire is reportedly being investigated by authorities.
Speaking to Jacaranda FM News, Nana Radebe, spokesman for the Johannesburg emergency services, said: “We received a structural call at Sandton, on arrival we found the fire had already been extinguished, luckily no injuries or deaths had been reported. We did not conduct a fire investigation because we did not provide service.”
Greenhouse Sandton initially made a social media emergency call after their restaurant went up in flames.
A video of the fire at Greenhouse Sandton posted on Twitter Saturday night showed some patrons of the establishment filming the fire on their phones, while others fled for their safety.
Another video shows people gathering in the parking lot as the fire rages.
In their first statement, the restaurant owners thanked emergency services for helping to extinguish the flames.
“We want to inform everyone that an unfortunate event has occurred at the Greenhouse tonight and that everyone is safe and well. We would like to thank the heroes and emergency services who helped us tonight,” reads the caption below an Instagram image with the same post.
According to Aspire Lifestyle, the establishment first opened in late 2019 and was initially located in the Oxford Parks development in the area.
A 2020 Times Live article listed the venture as a collaboration between Heinz Rynners, Brad Cilliers and Chef Thomas Hughes.
Both Cilliers and Hughes have experience with other establishments such as Babylon Bar in Illovo, Jacqueline’s Night Club in Pretoria, Perron and Winner Winner. For Hughes, Greenhouse Sandton is his ninth company in this arena. The late Chris Coutroulis of the Taboo Group was also named as one of the investors in this eatery.
Greenhouse became known for its unique aesthetic that brought the outdoors in through lush, green interiors and roof decor that made it seem like you were dining under the foliage of a greenhouse.
Their Rosebank location became such a success that they had to move to Sandton’s 24 Central district next to such establishments as Taboo Nightclub, the recently launched Monarch supper club and Solo restaurant.
The eatery recently hosted the cast of The Wife on Showmax for a viewing party ahead of the show’s season two launch. On Saturday afternoon (the day of the fire), music act Goodluck was booked.
Despite a video of burning pyrotechnic equipment targeting the above-ground artificial plants, it’s unclear at this stage what caused the fire or how much damage was done.
The The throwdowntv have reached out to the owners of Greenhouse Sandton and the on-site first responders for comment and have not yet received any feedback.
