How To Fix 100 Disk Usage in Windows 10?

Reader question:
Hi Wally, my HP laptop has an i7 processor, 8GB RAM and Windows 10. I have encountered a problem where it is extremely slow. I opened the task manager and saw that the disk usage is constantly at 100% and the CPU at about 40%. The computer only works under Windows. I’ve tried reinstalling Windows, restoring factory settings, and even replacing the hard drive, but nothing seems to work. Any ideas? Thank you very much in advance. – Justin Jay, USA

Before troubleshooting a computer problem, I always recommend analyzing and resolving the underlying issues that affect the health and performance of your PC:

  • Step 1: Download the PC recovery and optimization program (WinThruster for Win 10, 8, 7, Vista, XP and 2000 – Microsoft Gold Certified).
  • Step Two: Click on the Start scan button to detect problems in the Windows registry that may be causing PC problems.
  • Step Three: Click the Fix All button to fix all issues.

Setting up automatic weekly (or daily) scans will help prevent system problems and keep your PC running smoothly.

Wally’s reply: Hi Justin, slow hard drive performance is a major obstacle we see with most modern computers that still use mechanical hard drives. My first advice is to switch to an SSD (solid state drive) as soon as possible. This will greatly improve performance and you will thank me for it.

Hardware upgrades are not necessarily a problem here, however. If we have a software problem, we need to use software to solve it. We find the problem and solve it! Read the rest of this article to find out how to do this.

The user sees 100% disk usage in Task Manager after the system slowdown.

100% disk utilization can be caused by incorrect program behavior, malware or virus infection, Windows update errors, problematic web browser plug-ins, driver issues, etc.

Here are some of the most common causes of 100% disk usage and how to fix them.

Restarting the computer

As the old saying goes: Try turning the device off and on again.

Antivirus update to fix 100 disk usage in Windows 10.

As with most performance issues, we need to determine if Windows is infected with a virus or malware. You can use tools like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to scan Windows and remove malware and viruses if they infect your computer.

Tip: Check your computer for malware and viruses. A potentially dangerous program is not the same as a virus. So don’t worry if you get a warning from your chosen antivirus or anti-malware software.

Disable the Windows search feature and see if that helps.

Windows 10’s search feature can sometimes crash and cause an increased load on your computer’s hard drive.

You can check this by disabling the Windows Search Properties service.

Press the Windows+R key to open the Run dialog box.

Type services.msc and press Enter.

The Windows Services window should appear. In the Services window that opens, look for the Windows Search entry.

Double-click it to open the properties window.

If this was indeed the cause of the maximum disk usage issue, try running a DISM and SFC scan to fix Windows 10.

Disable SysMain to correct the use of 100 hard disks

Another Windows service known to cause a disk usage problem of 100 is the SysMain service.

To check if this is the case, open Windows PowerShell (Admin) and type: net.exe stop sysmain

Press the Enter key to execute the command

If this was indeed the cause of the maximum disk usage issue, try running a DISM and SFC scan to fix Windows 10.

Is the web browser causing this problem?

If your web browser is causing a 100 disk usage problem, you can check it by opening the task manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc).

Web browsers generally do not consume too much disk space. This could be a sign of a problematic browser plugin.

If you know which one, try disabling that browser plugin/add-on, then check Task Manager again. If the problem is really caused by a web browser, you can try resetting the web browser to solve the problem.

Is your PC healthy?

I always recommend my readers to regularly use a reliable registry cleaner and optimizer like WinThruster or CCleaner. Most of the problems that occur can be attributed to a damaged and bloated registry.
