Popular Twitch streamer xQc requested permission from Kanye West to play his new album Donda amid the current DMCA crisis. He streamed the video regardless of not receiving a response.
Last year, Twitch streamers were hit hard by the DMCA. Many streamers switched from listening to whatever music was available to them to only listen to LoFi beats that were not copiedrighted. Several bans related to the DMCA have been in circulation. Streamers removed all of their clips and VODs to avoid strikes and bans.
Felix Lengyel, AKA xQc, is one of Twitch’s most popular streamers. He has been known to break rules. Recently, he asked Kanye West permission to stream Donda’s live stream. xQc asked Kanye if he could watch Donda’s live event and reacted. He said that he loves music deeply and wants to share Kanye’s “art” with the Twitch community.
XQc requested Kanye West to respond, but he decided to stream it and risk another Twitch ban. However, he later deleted the VOD.
The first streaming site to ask an artist permission for their music is xQc. Another streamer Trainwrecks asked 21 Savage, his favourite rapper, permission to stream his music. The rapper replied by saying, “Fasho champ”. He has since listened to 21 Savage’s music on every stream.
While it is not clear if xQc will be subject to such a ban, he did not receive any reply from Kanye. However many people hope that he will get a strike. XQc’s channel remains active and there is no indication that he will be receiving a strike.
