Magic the Gathering Arena: An Overview

Fans have the good news that the new version will be F2P. This tutorial will guide players through all aspects and rules of the game, much in the same way as HearthStone. With the exception of their paid content, all those who took part in the closed beta saw their accounts deleted with the launch of the open beta. The account wiping is not planned for the transition to the official beta server. MTG Arena will see players who have just created accounts go through six tutorials, with a guide from the blue to help them navigate each stage. Players will then receive five decks built from the newest MTG core sets. Players will also earn gold, just like HearthStone. This gold can be used to purchase new packs. Players can get a discount by buying mass quantities of gems. You can win gems in some game modes, but only after an entry fee of gold or gems is paid.

The players can choose one of twelve avatars to be their representative during matches. A player may build up to a 60-card deck. This may seem like an enormous amount, but players have the ability to choose their avatar regardless of what type of deck they’ve built. The quest will reward them with a reward, similar to other online cards games.


Both players will see their seven-card starting hand before the game starts. They will also be offered the chance to swap their entire hand for six cards. In the initial round, the second player will draw an additional card. As with all Online card games the goal is to bring down your opponent’s health to twenty. This will be done by using a mixture of planeswalker, creature and spell cards. The number of cards they’ve played determines which type and kind of land cards they are playing.

Each turn, players can only play one land. A player’s total land count indicates how much mana is available to that particular color. This is important because all spells and creatures have a mana value that must be paid by any land cards the player holds. A player’s land-mana also determines how many cards they can activate per round. A player cannot play more than the number of land-mana they have at any given time. These land cards are then tapped, indicating they were used in that particular turn. If a player holds three or more white land cards, they can’t play any other white cards, which each requires two land-mana. The total mana required is four. At the beginning of each player’s next round, tapped land cards cannot be tapped.


The turns are divided into phases and players alternate turning. When a player draws their first card, they activate instants or abilities and play a new landcard. The player then moves on to the Main Phase. Now the players have access to spells, abilities and can place planeswalkers or new creatures. These can be counteracted by the opponent with immediate spells or abilities. Summoning Sickness is a condition that affects newly summoned creatures. They cannot attack that turn, unless the opponent has an ability to counteract it.

The active player then moves into the Combat phase. Here, they can choose which of their creatures, if any will attack, and whether it will target a specific planeswalker, or an opponent. Creatures cannot directly be targeted by other creatures. The opponent can then select additional spells or creatures to defend the target once the player has finished. An opponent may choose multiple creatures to protect a single target. The attacking creature has the option to decide which creatures they want to attack. The attacker can still attack the target if all the attacking creatures are killed, but the attacker has less than the maximum amount of attack power. To cast instant spells, the opponent must tap again into their mana pool of land cards.

Final phase: The attacking and blocking phases. The opponent will be attacked by all players. However, the player can decide whether their creature should defend themselves against an attack. Any creatures or planeswalkers which were not killed in that turn will return to their full health at the beginning of the next turn. Like HearthStone, some creatures can have special abilities such as “charge”. Players also have the option to use out-of-turn instant spell card cards to prevent attacks.

Important to remember that spells and abilities don’t activate instantly during turns. Instead, each player creates a stack, on which spells and counterspells can be placed until the last spell is played.

Match-Making and Rankings

Six ranks are available in Magic: The Gathering Arena at the moment. The ranks are divided into four levels, with the exception of the Master and Beginner ranks which have each only one level. The Mythic rank, which is a numerical rank for each player, extends beyond that.

Matchmaking depends on both a player’s rank and their deck strength. The theory is that weaker decks are matched with decks of similar strength. Although there is much debate about how this affects the game for paid players, it has likely been included in order to make F2P more accessible. It will also likely have less impact on match-ups as higher tier players achieve higher levels. Players are also rewarded at the start of every month with between 1 and 5 packs and 1000 gold, depending on their limited and constructed ranks. If a player achieves Diamond for Constructed or Silver for Limited rank during the season, both will be rewarded at the end of that month.

Buying New Cards

Five free decks will be given to players who complete the Magic: The Gathering Arena tutorial. They will continue to receive free decks for the following weeks, until reaching a maximum of 15 decks. They will then be able build and customize their decks.

Players, like HearthStone will be rewarded with daily quests which will give them a different amount of gold. You can use this gold to buy new booster packs. Gold can be earned by winning matches or participating in special events.

Players can also earn weekly and daily rewards as well as once-off quests. Use the Promo Code ‘PlayRavnica” to receive three free expansion packs of ‘Guild of Ravnica, which can only be activated once per player.

Every pack includes eight cards, which are non-repeating and guaranteed to contain: 1 rare or Mythic rarity card, 2 uncommon cards, 5 common cards. This could be the wild card. Players will be able to choose any wild card from the game’s rarity-type. Players won’t have to be concerned about duplicate cards and will still have the chance to get cards they want, even if they don’t have as many packs.

Real-world currency can be used to purchase gems. Players also have the option to use this currency to buy bundles. Gem purchases do not offer a bundle option. However, mass-purchases are subject to the same pricing. Players will be restricted from trading their cards, just like other card-games online.

A few wild cards are free for new players. Before exchanging cards for more, it is best to get familiar with the rules and practice. As they open more packs, players will be able to earn wild cards as a bonus.

A riskier method of getting packs is to accumulate gold and save it to participate in the Draft and Sealed events. They are expensive and can only be redeemed once players have won a minimum number of cards. Draft mode allows players to add all cards to their collection. This should give them at most a handful of useful cards.

Players can add only four cards to each deck. Fifth copies will disappear to an invisible vault. The vault will be visible when the invisible counter is fully filled. Players will then receive six wild cards: one mythic card, two rare, and three uncommon. The official launch date will likely change this structure.

The Magic: The Gathering Arena team will only release the most recent card sets to the online game. However, they expect around 1000 new cards each year so players don’t have to worry about getting bored with their decks. Open beta players will have the ability to buy packs from Core Set 2019 and four expansions. The legal decks are only available online, and cards will be discarded each season just like real-world decks. Cards are not legal for two years after their release. Some game modes do not have this limitation.

Color Factions

Players have the option to choose from nine different classes or five color factions when building their decks. It is important because there are very few neutral cards and most players rely on land to determine the kind of faction a player can use. Every color is unique and has their own play style. Although plaers have the ability to include any number of colors in their decks, grandmasters recommend that players stick with at least two or three colours per deck. These are the colors:

  • Tactical Assault – White

    They are primarily focused on protection and healing. These creatures can be combined. They are generally weak creatures, but they can become stronger when they have their abilities played off one another. You also get a variety of attack-prevention and board-wipe cards. These decks are focused on overwhelming your opponent with numbers.

  • Blue-Arcane Inventions

    For a more control-oriented play style, blue cards can be useful. Spell cards often focus on counter-spells and -actions. They also allow you to take control of other creatures. Many of the best cards can be used in later-game play because they are expensive.

  • Black Graveyard Bash

    Black plays with an expedient style of sacrifice and resurrection. Although many cards of this deck are very powerful, some are often self-destructive and require high skill.

  • Red – Dragon’s Fire

    Red cards are more aggressive. Red focuses on trying to establish early-game dominance. Red’s creatures are resistant to sickness summoning and may be used on their first turn.

  • Green is the Might of Forests

    Much of the game focuses on helping other cards, just like white. While many of these cards have a lot to offer, they are often less powerful than necessary for conflict resolution. Due to the power of green’s creatures, spell cards focus on mana generation to allow the more expensive cards to be used as soon as possible.

Play modes

Fast and Competent Play – No Cost

These two modes can be used F2P, and there are no rewards other than quest completion and bonus wins. These are generous as players can earn 500 to 750 gold per day and win bonus for as many as ten wins. They include individual cards and varying amounts in gold. Players can quickly earn enough gold for F2P to be able to take part in quick draft tournaments, at most once per week. Players can also use promotional codes to get free booster packs. These booster packs are usually issued with new expansions. Below are the details.

Quick Draft – 5,000 gold

They will be initially paired up with seven AI bots. After that, they’ll open a pack of 15 cards and then choose a card from the set. Once the cards have been completed, AI bots can take turns until they are done. The process will continue until the player builds a deck of 40 cards. The players will now compete against each other. No matter how well they do in matches, all cards from their decks will be added into the card pool. You can play as many losses as you like or as many wins. This will give players a maximum two packs and 950 gems.

Competitive Draft – 1,500 Gems

The mode is similar to Quick Draft except each pack begins with 14 cards and ends up at 40. Each player will play their opponent until they have two wins and two losses. Two losses would end their run. Quick Draft has a maximum of five wins, but the returns on winning are higher than Quick Draft. Players will earn packs of gems and an additional four packs for every three wins.

Constructed to be Competitive – 1000 Gold

The players buy in to have their decks, and they break even with two wins. There is also a bonus of three cards. Players can win five matches or lose two.

Sealed- 2,000 Gems

Each player must build their deck from the six packs of 15 cards they have received. Players cannot take cards from their own collection. The cards and any prizes won by the players are theirs to keep. With tiered awards, players can win or lose seven matches.

MTG Arena Legal Sets

Standard MTG Arena can only be used for legal sets. Every set and expansion that Wizards of the Coast releases rotates with the Fall release the following year. A set that is released in Fall will be available for two years, while its three successors have less standard playability. MTG Arenasaid it will introduce an alternative format, called “Eternal”, that is similar to Hearthstone’s Wild format. This format allows players to keep using the cards they have in Standard. The main difference between and is the lack of a ‘Classic” variant set in MTG, so all legal cards will eventually leave the Standard set. Wizards may sometimes produce the same card twice.


MTG arena launched a major upgrade on March 27, 2019. This allowed for the introduction of new features, such as:

  • You can now purchase new content in gold and gems such as avatars (alternative cards backs), card sleeves, bundle content, or card sleeves.
  • Foil cards are 3D versions of cards that can be used as alternative 3D renders. To be able to use the card, the player must own it. Once it is earned or purchased, they can choose to opt in or not to use it.
  • New MTG Arenaplayers will enjoy a new onboarding experience, which includes a skill tree.
