Limpopo MEC for public works, roads and infrastructure Namane Dickson Masemola is tipped to challenge current ANC provincial chairman and prime minister Stan Mathabatha at the party’s provincial election conference later this year.
Masemola and Mathabatha were born in January 1957. They also both come from a district in the Sekhukhune region.
In the new list, released this weekend, Masemola is touted as provincial president of the ANC. The province has five regions and Masemola is said to have Limpopo MEC for public works, roads and infrastructure. Namane Dickson Masemola is tipped to challenge the current provincial chairman of the ANC, and the prime minister has received overwhelming support from one and a few isolated sub-regions.
“We are confident that under the tutelage of Comrade Masemola, Limpopo will remain the home of the ANC,” said Masilo Maloko, president of the Phusela branch in Tzaneen.
According to Joel Seabi, spokesman for Limpopo’s public works department, Masemola is not only an experienced politician who knows local government through and through, he is also highly educated. Last December, Masemola graduated with a PhD in public administration from the University of Limpopo.

This made him one of the most qualified politicians in Limpopo. He has also served in various local government positions as mayor, executive mayor and as MEC in various departments such as roads, community safety, education and public works.
The 65-year-old politician was also deputy provincial chairman of the Limpopo ANC chaired by former provincial chairman Cassel Mathale. The provincial secretary of the ANC, Soviet Lekganyane, has called for calm, free and fair appointments ahead of the General Assemblies of the Sections (BGMs).
The BGMs are gatherings where members nominate their favorite candidates to be part of the provincial executive committee of Limpopo ANC (PEC).
“We have seen in the past how political bigotry resulted in prolonged political infighting, making it impossible for other provinces to hold free and fair elections,” Lekganyane said.
According to the latest membership audits, Limpopo is now the second largest ANC province in terms of membership after KwaZulu-Natal.
The province has 234 663 members, followed by the Eastern Cape in third place with 212 205 members. Mpumalanga is the fourth largest province in the ANC with 181,761 members.
