Ryan Reynolds And Shawn Levy Want To Make A Free Guy Sequel

In this era of mega franchises and crossover event movies, 2021’s free man was a rare unicorn of a movie: an original IP. While it had many pop culture references ranging from Two weeks to marvel at Star WarsThe film itself stood on its own two feet. And the audience responded: free man took in more than $330 million at the box office at a time when moviegoers were still reluctant to even go to the theater. The story of Guy, a video game NPC played by Ryan Reynolds, who got feelings and helped bring down a ruthless game company The CEO had a lot of heart and a surprisingly good script. It was just an overall solid movie.

But this is natural is the era of mega franchises and event movies, so the natural question that arose after that Free guys critical and commercial success is: will we have a sequel? According to Reynolds and director Shawn Levy, the answer is…maybe?

Address of Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy free man follow-up questions

Levy and Reynolds seem like a match made in movie heaven. The pair have previously talked about how easy their collaboration on the film was, but the proof is in the pudding: they’ve gone on to create ever since. The Adam Project for Netflix and plan to continue working together well into the future.

“We’re very lucky to have found each other at this stage of our career, where it’s unlike any kind of working relationship I’ve ever had, and I’ve had some great ones. But I love working with Shawn, “and I hope I can make you as many movies as humanly possible. As I get to make many, I hope they’re with Shawn,” Reynolds said.

The Adam Project is an upcoming Netflix movie in which Reynolds’ character Adam travels back in time from the future and teams up with a child version of themselves to find their missing father (played by Mark Ruffalo) and save the world. While promoting the film, Levy and Reynolds were asked by Collider about the possibility of a free man follow-up.

“We loved free man‘ said Levi. “We were very happy that free man was as successful as it was, and especially as an original movie at a time when few are made and even fewer hits. So that was gratifying. And if we can crack that sequel, it might be a lot of fun to make together.”

Levy said there is “real interest” from 20th Century Fox (now owned by Disney) in making a sequel, but the duo has been waiting for a script treatment before committing to anything. “We had such a clear idea of the tone, the story, the details of… free man, and we’ve both made a few sequels in our lives, so we know how hard it is to make a worthy one,” the director said. “And if we’re sure this is the kind we’re going to make, then we’ll make it.”

“The things we’re into are stories that we really want to tell, stories that the studios we’re talking to are ready to go as soon as we’re ready to go,” Reynolds said. “For us, the main thing is that the story is right, the script is right before you go to the camera, because that’s all. We both know it’s a slippery slope to physical production before anything is really ready.”

As good as free man was and as fun as any possible sequel may be, you have to respect the artistic line in the sand that Levy and Reynolds draw here. We’ve all seen successful movies get bombarded with sequels after disappointing sequels by studios trying to squeeze as much money out of them as possible. Levy and Reynolds’ Commitment to Making a free man continue only if it feels like the right call is refreshing. And hey… maybe it’s that kind of artistic integrity that led to the movie being so good in the first place.

The Adam Project arrives on Netflix on March 11.
