After losing 30 billion of in-game gold, a Twitch streamer who goes under the pseudonym VoldemartLive began to freak out while streaming Old School RuneScape.
Jagex has published Old School RuneScape, a hugely multiplayer online role playing game.
It is a mainly point and click interface. In-game gold and in-game objects in RuneScape are valuable commodities. Players and businesses can trade the items for real cash, just like other MMOs. Trading in-game items in real-world situations is a violation of rules and could result in bans. However, it can also be a profitable way for RuneScape players to earn real cash. On August 26, VoldemartLive, a twitch streamer, made the mistake of logging into a PvP realm. This led to him losing over 30 million gold.
VoldemartLive, his wife and their child were streaming live on the stream. His viewers were watching him play Old School Runescape and interacted with his chat. He didn’t realize he was actually in PvP and had 30 billion gold stored in his inventory. The streamer was instantly attacked by another player, and could not escape.
VoldemartLive panicked and asked viewers for help. But it was too late, as the other player had already taken him down. VoldemartLive briefly fled the screen, while VoldemartLive’s wife was sitting in shock and covering her mouth with her arm. His young son was watching in disbelief as the streamer returned to screen and started smashing his controller onto a chair. The streamer’s wife covered his face, and then he ran out of the room.
Some players believe that death on stream, which was roughly $15,000 in value at 30 billion gold, was an attempt to cover up the transfer. It is impossible to prove that the trade was intentional because one player died to cover it up. While some believe the confrontation was real, most people feel it was staged.
