Two big blinds, and a dream

Poker players will be familiar with the “chip and a seat” legend. It was created by Jack Strauss who thought he was winning and only had one remaining chip. The tournement was won by Jack Strauss. My new tournament poker term is “two big blinds, and a dream.”

This is what I saw as I played the Party Poker PLO Powerfest just before the bubble burst.

Pre-flop, I was able to get all of my chips with th AAxx vs KKxx. It’s not unusual to get it all in pre-flop with Aces and Kings, but Omaha is different. Hand equities are much closer than Holdem. Needless to mention, I lost the hand.

It was there to make a deep-run in an event. I folded my next few hands, and then waited for the right hand. Fortunately, it survived. Before I knew what, I was back playing with a good amount of blinds. My Aces were cracked and I was able to play some solid plays, but I ended up in a situation I didn’t expect. With only eight players remaining, I became chip leader. This is when things turned sour.

You can call it overconfidence or naivety, but my fortunes changed from being on the verge of disaster to just a few feet away of the Final Table. The hand I dealt was one that I had to analyse over and over again. There were mistakes made, but they can be learned and the hand ended up costing me half of my stack. I am currently 4th from 8th, and I would have been in a much better position if I remembered my previous predicament.

I felt like half of my stack was gone. It hurt more than it ought to. After a couple of hands, I had my chips in hand with a draw. But that’s essentially it. A draw is a hand that will win a certain percentage of the times. This was not a situation that I wanted to find myself in, and I was eventually eliminated.

Although The Dream is still alive and well, I am stronger for having failed in the Poker Series event.
