‘We have to do better’

Artists close to the late Riky Rick, such as Black Coffee and Cassper Nyovest, paid their last respects to the rapper at the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg for the special tribute held Friday.

Hip Hop artist Moozile was the MC at the event and gave the opening speech.

She thanked Riky’s family for making him the man he was, thanked his wife Bianca Naidoo and shared some words of encouragement for his children.

Kwaito legend Kabelo Mabalane delivered a powerful opening prayer, followed by a performance by the East Rand artist and one of Riky Rick’s favorite singers, Clyde.

Riky Rick’s older brother Shakes Makhado described him as a pioneer and a genius who left no one behind, saying that his legacy will live on through his family, his wife Bianca and their two children.

He strengthened his brother’s eagerness to help young talent and touched Riky’s love and obsession with fashion.

Musical performances and tribute to friends at Riky Rick’s tribute:

The gifted and talented singer-songwriter Loyiso who performed at the funeral delivered another tear-jerking performance with Riky Rick’s voice rapping in the background.

Since the theme was “freshest drip”, Moozile went through a few fashion changes as guests came out in their best stylish “fits”.

Group Boyz n Buckz, of which Riky Rick was a former member since 2008, also shared a few words.

Members included Bhubesi, Mkay Frash, Stilo Magolide, and there was a performance by Mome Mahlangu and her husband Tol Ass Mo. The group said they shared a love of music and sneakers, and that they were inspired by his courage and ambition.

There were more hip-hop acts, including Costa Titch, Nadia Nakai, who had collaborated with Riky on hit songs such as Areyangzonke and amabotomzane.

In addition to musical performances were Lira, Mzansi Youth Choir, Frank Casino, Moozile and Big Zulu, who performed their big hit Imali Eningi.

Black Coffee blames itself for Riky’s death:

The international DJ fought back tears during his speech. He said that Riky’s death hit him hard and that he blamed himself for his death.

Black Coffee reflected on a tweet he posted and deleted prior to Riky’s passing, and how much he blamed himself knowing that he had shown signs of vulnerability in the knowledge that Riky may have seen his tweet.

Black Coffee said black people should stop “embarrassing themselves” after Riky’s letters to his relatives were leaked to the media by a “black man”.

He added that we are increasingly putting each other down on social media and no longer cheering ourselves up.

“Why was something so special and so delicate as Riky’s last words written on a newspaper by a black man?” adding that we should “do better”.

Black Coffee’s words were talked about a lot on Twitter

“My Idol” – Cassper Nyovest

Cassper Nyovest was next on the podium. The artist’s friendship with Riky went through ups and downs, as a result of which they did not speak for eight years. But they solved their problems in 2020.

This made fans burst out with joy when they saw him appear at Wanderers Stadium. Cassper said that Riky was never afraid to tell anyone the hard truth and called him his idol.

“Not only was he a beautiful man, but he was also a beautiful soul,” Cassper added, before pledging to be there for Bianca and the family.

Riky Rick’s Cotton Fest music and city culture event is slated for late March, something Cassper said they needed to make it happen.
